Distinguished guests, honorable presidents of VUPDA, CPIJ and TIUP, respected participants, ladies and gentlemen,
It is with great pleasure that I stand before you today to extend my warmest congratulations on the successful opening of the 2023 International Conference of Asia-Pacific Planning Societies in Da Nang, Vietnam. This remarkable event has brought together planning professionals, scholars, policymakers from across the Asia-Pacific region to exchange knowledge, ideas, and experiences in the pursuit of sustainable and inclusive urban environment.
Planning plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of our cities and societies. As urbanization continues to accelerate, the challenges we face in ensuring livable, resilient, and equitable cities have become increasingly complex. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic addend economic, social, and environmental pressures to our cities. The International Conference of Asia-Pacific Planning Societies provides a crucial platform to address these urban challenges, share best practices in urban planning and development, and foster collaboration among colleagues from four different Asian Associations.
This year’s conference is the first face-to-face conference after the COVID-19 outbreak, which has been anticipated long and eagerly. Hence, look forward to witnessing the even stronger power of collective intelligence and the spirit of cooperation. Scholars and practitioners with diverse expertise from four countries will provide thought-provoking discussions, and share their research findings, innovative strategies, and practical experiences in tackling the pressing issues of our cities. The conference will cover the wide range and depth of topics, from heritage conservation and promotion, which is the main theme of this year’s conference, to urban regeneration and smart planning.
I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the organizing committee of VUPDA for their unwavering commitment and meticulous planning, which will be instrumental in making this conference a resounding success. Their dedication, creativity, and attention to details will ensure a fruitful experience for all participants and foster an environment conducive to meaningful discussions and collaborations.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to the esteemed keynote speakers, session chairs, and presenters who will share their expertise and insights. Your contributions will enrich the discussions, stimulate new ideas, and inspired all of us to push the boundaries of urban planning and development in the Asia-Pacific region. Your dedication to advancing urban planning practices, your passion for creating livable cities, and your commitment to a better future are truly commendable.
Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge the invaluable support of our sponsors and partners. Their unwavering commitment to fostering knowledge exchange and advancing the field of urban planning has been instrumental in facilitating this conference. Their contributions have not only enabled us to gather here today but have also strengthened our continuing efforts in creating sustainable, inclusive, and thriving cities.
As we begin this year’s conference, let us be committed to active discussions and network building. Let us also contemplate how to translate the ideas and lessons learned into action, working collaboratively across borders and disciplines to address the urban challenges that lie ahead. By fostering ongoing dialogue, sharing best practices, and nurturing partnerships, we can create sustainable cities that could reflect the needs and aspirations of diverse communities they serve.
Finally, I hope the connections created and the knowledge gained during the conference will serve as a catalyst for positive transformation in our cities and societies in future. Together, let us continue to strive for sustainable urban development, promote inclusive communities, and create resilient cities in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
Thank you, and enjoy the conference!
